Gallery Edition – Tulane University Library by A. Robertson – 44×55 Interior Architectural Study

Curatorial Narrative A. Robertson’s “Tulane University Library” (1907) occupies a distinct position within the early 20th-century architectural landscape, predating the advent of modernist movements yet exhibiting a nascent awareness of spatial rhythm and chromatic structure. The artist’s linear brushwork, devoid of ornamentation, instead emphasizes the tectonic qualities of the building’s faade, imbuing the composition with a sense of rationality and sobriety. This restraint is further underscored by the palette’s reduction to black and white, stripping the image of extraneous detail and focusing attention on the underlying spatial logic. When enlarged to 44×55, the palette’s binary opposition assumes an architectural scale, generating a chromatic structure that oscillates between luminosity and shadow. The resultant atmospheric weight is substantial, conjuring an environment where material pairings assume paramount importance cons
