Curatorial Narrative In the realm of 19th-century French caricature, Armand Gautier’s “Caricature de Thiers” (1871) occupies a singular position, distinguished by its masterful confluence of technical virtuosity and sardonic wit. Gautier’s technique, characterized by its precision and restraint, orchestrates a visual rhythm that is at once playful and incisive. When enlarged to 44×44 inches, “Caricature de Thiers” assumes a presence that is both commanding and nuanced. The chromatic structure, dominated by the brown tones, creates a spatial depth that is at once recessive and inviting. This
