Gallery Edition – Cows by Arthur Dove – 61×44 Interior Architectural Study

Curatorial Narrative As we position “Cows” by Arthur Dove within the canon of 1930s American modernism, it becomes clear that this work embodies the artist’s pioneering spirit in Abstract Expressionism. Created in 1935, this painting showcases Dove’s innovative technique, where impasto brushstrokes converge to form a gestural, almost three-dimensional quality. The predominantly brown and white palette, punctuated by flashes of green, orange, and black, imbues the composition with a sense of earthy vitality. This chromatic structure, in turn, generates an atmosphere both grounded and dynamic, as if the cows themselves were about to emerge from the canvas. When enlarged to 61×44 inches, the spatial depth and compositional structure of “Cows” assume a monumental quality, capable of anchoring a luxury interior environment. The brown and white hues take on a sense of materiality, evoking the textures of natural fibers or rough-hewn stone.
